Breath Prayers
Recently, a friend wrote to me about the challenges she was having at work. I’m not sure what it is called, but there are some words that sound like what they are. Work is one of those. Her struggles were real and the trials great. She is a person of faith, but at times, she got to the end of her rope.
I suggested breath prayers.
Breath prayers come from as early as the 6th century. They should last only as long as a breath, but can be recited as many times as you would like throughout the day. Here are some ways to do this.
As you breathe out, you are breathing out all the frustration, anxiety, and anger that you feel in your heart for this person or situation. Imagine being cleansed of your poisonous feelings. As you breathe in, having been emptied, you are now filled with the Holy Spirit as you say in your mind or in your mouth, “Lord, in thy mercy, hear my prayer” or from the Psalms, “Be still and know that I am God.”
Prayer is to be constant as we listen for the Lord’s voice throughout the day. This is just a helpful way to do just that.
