Singing Our Faith
The church wants to stay connected to you during these times. As always, call or text me directly as our office hours will be flexible. My phone number is 678-756-4880.
One of the ways that we as Methodists have traditionally been in relationship with each other has been through singing our faith. In fact, John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, had some rules about singing. They may strike us as old-fashioned; they strike me as good advice. For instance, do you think you’re a nonsinger because you’re afraid you sing out of tune. Don’t worry! Wesley instructs you to “Sing lustily and with good courage. Beware of singing as if you were half dead, or half asleep; but lift up your voice with strength.” Maybe you like your voice a little too much. Well, he reminds you to “Sing modestly. Do not bawl, so as to be heard above or distinct from the rest of the congregation, that you may not destroy the harmony; but strive to unite your voices together, so as to make one clear melodious sound.” Most importantly, “Above all sing spiritually. Have an eye to God in every word you sing. Aim at pleasing him more than yourself, or any other creature.”
To help you continue singing during our physical separation, here’s a list of songs that are especially helpful in times of trouble.
“A Mighty Fortress”
“Be Still My Soul”
“Be Thou My Vision”
“Blessed Assurance”
“How Firm a Foundation”
“It Is Well with My Soul”
“Rock of Ages”
“Solid Rock”
“Tis So Sweet to Trust In Jesus”
“What a Friend We Have In Jesus”
You can go to Youtube and type in any of these hymns and sing along. It can be a time of sweet serenity for you.
If you want to borrow a United Methodist Hymnal, please come by the church – we’ve got lots for you to borrow and enjoy.
